Joe Lizura's thoughts on the drought

Joe Lizura's thoughts on the drought - July 13, 2012.  Here is the latest article on what has now become the largest drought declaration in U.S. history.  http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/12/12703598-exploding-hay-watering-bans-are-latest-signs-of-worsening-drought?lite

There are currently more than 1,000 counties in the United States covering 61% of the U.S. land mass (including Alaska and Hawaii).  This is a phenomenal issue for this country.  As a Meteorologist, I have lectured on the subject of water on multiple occassions and my message has always been the same; our country has done a terrible job of planning the most important resource of all - water.

The ability to move water from one place to another is one of the most crucial capabilities a nation must have, yet our country has only a limited capability on the west coast.  The success and survival of countries is not measured by hundreds of years, but by thousands of years, and places on our planet that were once lush with vegetation are not deserts.  Take Ethiopia for example, more than 2,000 years ago it was a lush and fertile country that was so powerful that even the Egyptian army would not fight against it, and now, 2,000 years later it cannot even feed its own people.

World climates change and weather patterns come and go, the "have's" can easily become the "have not's" and no matter how technologically advanced you are, socially advanced, and even militarily advanced you are - it will all come crashing down if there is ever a 10 or a 20 year drought over your region - something which has happened thousands of times throughout history.

Well, those are just my thoughts, we need to make moving water around this country as easy as it is to move freight around on the railroads.

San Diego Padres Sale

Phil Michelson is part of a group of businessmen who have made a bid to buy the San Diego Padres for an estimated $800 million dollars.
Phil Mickelson, a San Diego homeboy and lifelong Padres fan, is getting in on the impending purchase of the team. Mickelson is part of a team headed by former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley that is on the verge of purchasing the team, according to Fox Sports.

Phil has always been supported and loved by almost everyone is San Diego, so having him as one of the owners can only support the undying love of baseball in San Diego.  Another benefit of the purchase is that Phil and the investment group will also be buying a $200 million dollar chunk of Fox Sports in San Diego as well - maybe we'll get lucky and we can have a few hours of instructional golf videos as well!  Good Luck Phil!  Here is a link to the entire news story - http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/golf-devil-ball-golf/report-phil-mickelson-buying-ownership-san-diego-padres-190338547--golf.html

Divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes settled quickly

July 9, 2012.  Joe Lizura Blog.  Wow, that sure was fast!  The divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has already been settled!  How's that even possible?  Well it looks like Tom Cruise didn't want to have too much information come out about his relationship, so the natural thing to do appears to have Katie Holmes' attorney and Cruise's attorney (or most likely attorneys) spend the weekend working it all out.  From what I've gathered, it appears Tom is very upset, but Katie has moved on already - well whatever the case, I wish both of them the best as they move forward.  Here is a link to the latest:  http://omg.yahoo.com/news/tom-cruise-and-katie-holmes-reach-divorce-settlement-two-weeks-after-split.html

Tom Cruise highest paid actor

Joe_Lizura
Joe Lizura - Tom Cruise tops the list of Hollywood's highest paid actors.  July 4, 2012.  Here is the story from Forbes which lists the highest paid actors in Hollywood.  No big surprise here, Tom Cruise tops the list with 75 million dollars.  It was interesting to see that Adam Sandler was one of the highest paid actors, it looks like his Happy Gilmore Productions is doing very well!  Congrats to him.  Here is the link to the story:  http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tom-cruise-tops-our-list-of-hollywood-s-highest-paid-actors.html   I haven't seen the list of films coming out for fall 2012 and summer 2013 so I'm not sure if there are more blockbusters on the way or not.

Just as a side note, Cruise's movie "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" brought in about 700 million dollars as of recent accounts, but is sure to reach close to 1 billion when DVD sales and downloads are factored in during the rest of 2012.

Joe Lizura. July 1, 2012

July 1, 2012. Charlie Sheen's new show sets a record!  Check it out, "Anger Management" debuted with an all-time record viewership for a cable comedy series.  Personally I must say, I watched both episodes as it was an "hour show" of two back to back episodes, and I thought it was really good.  Charlie Sheen did a great job, and the writing was very, very good.  Here is a link to the story:  http://tv.yahoo.com/news/-anger-management--scores-biggest-comedy-debut-in-cable-history.html  There seems to be a very good supporting cast as well and with the solid fan base of Charlie Sheen, it looks like the series will be on for a long time to come.  As for 2 1/2 men, I think their days are numbered as Ashton Kutcher probably will not be able to deliver the style of show that the viewers had come to know.  Either way, I wish the best for both shows!

Here is more from the posted story.
Charlie Sheen's new FX comedy "Anger Management" debuted to huge numbers last night, scoring the biggest scripted comedy debut in cable history. It pulled in 5.47 million total viewers, with 2.65 million of those in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic; that's the biggest series premiere in FX history. And even better news for Sheen and FX: The audience grew as the hour went on, with an audience of 5.74 million viewers tuning in for "Anger's" second half-hour.

Now those numbers are a far cry from Sheen's former show, CBS's "Two and a Half Men," which drew an average of 15 million viewers this past season -- its first with Ashton Kutcher replacing Sheen. But viewers abandoned "Men" as Kutcher's debut season wore on, with only 11.33 million tuning in for May's season finale. And to be fair, "Men" airs on a major network during the prime TV viewing season, while "Anger" debuted on a relatively tiny cable network in the middle of summer.
